SA Steel Imports Continues to Rise In August

According to data released by the South African Revenue Service, imports of primary carbon and alloy steel products (excluding stainless steel and drawn wire) amount to 121,144 tonnes during August 2022, an increase of 11,5% compared with 108,634 tonnes imported during July 2022 and an increase of 13,3% compared with 92,120 tonnes imported during August 2021.

Imports of primary carbon and alloy steel products (excluding semis, stainless steel, and drawn wire) during the first eight months of 2022 amount to 701,701 tonnes, a decrease of 39,2% compared with 975,117 tonnes of primary carbon and alloy steel products imported during the corresponding period of 2021.

Flat steel products were the main contributor to the month-on-month increase, up 15,57% whilst semis and profiles declined by 56,07% and 39,79% respectively.
