Global crude steel production down 4.3% on year in 2022: worldsteel

Crude steel is steel in its first solid (or usable) form: ingots, semi-finished products (billets, blooms, slabs), and liquid steel for castings. Global crude steel production as reported by World Steel Association (worldsteel) was 1,831.5 million tonnes (Mt) for Jan-Dec 2022, down 4.3% compared to Jan-Dec 2021.During December 2022 140.7 million tonnes (Mt)of crude steel production was produced, down 10.8% compared to the corresponding previous period in 2021.

Africa produced 14.9 Mt in Jan-Dec 2022, down 6.6% on Jan-Dec 2021. Asia and Oceania
produced 1 351.3 Mt, down 2.3%. The EU (27) produced 136.7 Mt, down 10.5%. Europe, Other
produced 44.7 Mt, down12.2%. The Middle East produced 44.0 Mt, up 7.1%. North America
produced 114.4 Mt, down 5.0%. Russia & other CIS + Ukraine produced 85.2 Mt, down 20.2%. South
America produced 43.3 Mt, down 5.0%.

India is the only country amongst the Top 10 steel producing countries that recorded positive growth in 2022.

China remains the biggest producer of steel, accounting for about 55.3% of total global crude steel. The world’s second-largest steel producer, India, is the only country amongst the Top 10 steel producing countries that recorded positive growth during Jan-Dec 2022. In 2022 India produced 124.7 million tonnes (Mt), up 5.5%.
