Government extends the Ban on export of certain Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Waste and Scrap Metal by another Six months

On 15 July 2023, the Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Ebrahim Patel issued a Trade Policy Directive to the International Trade Administrations of South Africa (“ITAC”) to extend the ban of export of certain scrap metal for a further six months.
This follows a government gazette on 15 May 2023 consultation with industry on proposal to ban certain scrap metal exports under hs code 72.04 (excluding 7204.21) and 7404.00 and the suspension of the price preference system(PPS) insofar as it relates scrap metal under hs code 72.04 (excluding 7204.21) and 7404.00 for a further temporary period of nine months or until the date on which the PPS terminates, whichever is earlier.
