SAISI Committees

Steel Market Development Committee

The SMDC, a standing committee of SAISI, increases and defends the use of steel by developing and maintaining domestic market opportunities and explore export market opportunities. SMDC works to differentiate steel based applications and demonstrate steel as the highest-value material in all the steel using industries and markets and is representative of all steel manufacturing in South Africa

Steel Recycling Committee (Incorporating HAZCOM Committee)

The SRC, a standing committee of SAISI and formally known as the ferrous supply committee, access the availability of ferrous input material in the country that impacts sustainability of the South African steel industry. Its function includes collating and analysing data and information on behalf of the industry, and advising industry on responses and positioning in respect of critical issues.

The HAZCOM Committee is a joint committee for the detection, safe removal and the disposal of radioactive, explosive and other hazardous material in the metallic raw material recycling industry.

Environmental Affairs Committee (Incorporating Technology Committee)

The EAC, a standing committee of SAISI, provides input on matters affecting environmental matters, waste disposal, the carbon footprint and water affairs in the South African steel industry. Its function includes collating and analysing data and information on behalf of the industry, and advising industry on responses and positioning in respect of critical issues.

The Technology Committee contributes to the sustainability of the steel industry via education and promotion of careers in Engineering and Metallurgy, interact with Universities, represent the steel industry in technical forums such as “Clean Steel”

Safety and Health Committee

The SHC, a standing committee of SAISI, provides input on matters affecting safety and health in the South African steel industry. Nothing is more important than the safety and health of the people who work in the steel industry.

International Trade Promotion Committee (Incorporating Economics & Statistics)

The ITPC, a standing committee of SAISI, that is committed to increasing and expanding the activities into other developing countries in Africa. Its function includes collating and analysing data and information on behalf of the industry, and advising industry on responses and positioning in respect of critical issues in-so-far as logistics, cross border trade, non- tariff barriers and training of SARS Custom Officials ito steel product knowledge.
